Love the ZINE

A zine (pronounced zeen and short for fanzine) is a small circulation, self published work usually photocopied and stapled. A base version of a magazine…the sort of thing you would have made for a uni project.
They were a lot more prolific before the blog took over as an updatable online version but they are cute and serve as a great reminder that a fan of anything deserves to be revered.
The Outpost (5 Winn Street Fortitude Valley) sells zines.
Melbourne has a great zine shop in Campbell Arcade, which runs beneath Flinders Street..Sticky Zine Shop.

or order some online just for the hell of it…and especially if you like the smell of hard work and photocopiers!

and finally…a great blog with a beautiful zine…

DIA Bubble and Speak series

Bubble and Speak is a great series but its branding and animation is just beautiful.
Well Done designfront.

Baggage sculpture Sacramento Airport

While I was looking for images of luggage I came across this fantastic sculpture at Sacramento Airport.
It’s by an artist called Brian Goggin……his site reads….

“SAMSON” is two 23-foot tall pillars constructed of over 700 pieces of refurbished luggage dating from the conceptual genesis of the airplane to the present. At the base of the towers of luggage are large carts, designed to emulate the luggage carts which are used by personnel to haul suitcases from the airport to the airplane. To the disoriented traveler, the proliferation of baggage is toweringly awesome. (http://www.metaphorm.org/)

Aladdin illustration

I discovered this lovely Aladdin illustration in the local Lifeline shop.
The trees are my favourite bit.

THE TENDER CENTRE

The Tender Centre is a cross between a car boot sale, a garage sale and an op shop…but you tender.
Last week I got some great old shipping floats for the garden.
This week I put a big old $4 on this painting (amateur art but what a great viewpoint and composition) and a whacking $11 (always add a $1 to what you’d be happy to pay to round up over the rounder uppers….) for the Host A Murder set! If I win that I’ll let you know how the dinner part goes!

WOOLOONGABBA ANTIQUES

Wooloongabba Antiques is not just a big bulging marketplace; it’s also a fantastically curated hive of inspiration.
Fabrics and maps and vintage ads and art….typographic ideas and colour swatches on every corner.
I, surprise surprise, had to take a few things with me – the oil painting of the sailing boat (for only $75) would have seen me committing a crime, had I left it there!

ANNA SILVER JEWELS

I met a woman who makes the most lovely bespoke Jewellery that I have come across in a long time.

QUILTS

Pay £10 to look at Quilts?
I did, and was thoroughly entertained!
I went.to th Victoria & Albert museum; money in hand and what was on show….quilts!
The images here are all seruptiuously taken with Leo’s baby Charlie as cover; in very low light with my shonky iPhone camera..as per usual. Hopefully though, you can get an idea of the staggering detail and beauty. Stitch upon stitch upon metres of ancient fabrics.
The first image is a 30cm square of pure silk, quilted of course, that is a tiny part of a 3m x 2.5m piece from the 17th century.
There are some beautiful pieces that you would now call illustration that made me want to whip out the sewing machine and start illustrating…and I will.
There is also a tiny part from a large quilt that sees Liberty prints cut and turned into a smorgasbord of English flags. (I went to Libertys and they have a sarong for sale that is one of the English flags from the many that make up this quilt….which was first?)
